Getting A Sound On the Xiao

1. First, try shaping your mouth as pronouncing “pu”. You should try to close the oval opening at the front of your mouth as small as possible to blow a concentrated airstream.

2. Place your lip on the edge of the blowing hole. Your lip should be in the centre of the blowing hole and cover about 1/3 of the blowing hole.

3. Lift your fingers off the finger holes. Just hold the both ends of the flute.

4. Point your lips diagonally downward and blow a solid stream of air directly at the opposite edge of the blowing hole. Be sure not to puff out your cheeks or lift up your bottom lip when you blow.

5. To be able to produce a sound, some of your airstream should go into the hole and some should go across. You'll have to try blowing at different angles until you get one that works.

6. It’s best to try for only brief periods and come back to it frequently. Dizziness and tingling feelings in your limbs are normal at this stage—use them as a signal to rest.

7. Once you get a consistent and steady sound, you can start to blow notes by closing the fingers hole one by one from the 8th hole to the 1st hole.

8. Once all the notes can be achieved, you may try to practice scales. Blow from the lowest note to the highest note and vice versa. Try to achieve a longer and steadier sound when practice.

9. Note that scale practice is important for building up stamina. Regularly practice on it.
