1. Before start applying the dimo, make sure your hand is clean. Dirt such as oil or water on the dimo will affect the sound produce. Be careful when handling because dimo can be damaged easily.
2. Cut the long piece of dimo into small size at about half an inch. The dimo is usually come in a flatted cylinder shape so you have to cut through it and open it to form a rectangular shape.
3. Curl up the rectangular shape dimo into a stripe in order to restore its elasticity for a better timbre. After that, gently unfold the dimo and stretch the dimo to form artificial grains.
4. Note that the dimo natural grains must be parallel with the flute grains while the dimo artificial grains must be perpendicular to the flute grains. **
5. Make sure the surrounding of the membrane hole, include the inner part of the membrane hole is clean before applying the dimo.
6. Put a few drops of water on the ‘ah jiao’. Gently smear the mucilage on the surrounding of the membrane hole to make it viscid.
7. Press one end of the dimo on to the side of the membrane hole using thumb while the another hand thumb and index finger gently pull the dimo to form artificial grains.
8. Gently paste the other side of the dimo. Make sure it is pasted tight.
9. The artificial grains should be fine and even without overlapping of grains. Otherwise it can be easily produce a buzzing sound.
10. If the flute sounds dull, the dimo is too tight. Try breath upon dimo to loosen up the dimo. In addition, apply some water around the membrane hole.
11. If the sound is buzz or unable to sound, the dimo is too loose. Apply some water around the membrane hole and then tighten it lightly.
12. Beginners are not advisable to apply dimo because it might increase the difficulty to control the sound. Alternatively, use a piece of scotch tape to cover up the membrane hole. **
